Thames-Coromandel District Council

The Coromandel Peninsula is unique in terms of its people and its socio-economic characteristics. The Thames-Coromandel district includes a mix of primary production activity (farming, fishing and forestry) and small beach settlements together with national and international tourism, second homes and retirement settlements.

In the past provision of the necessary infrastructure has not kept pace with these changes and, with further large growth expected, Council must ensure its strategic direction can meet these challenges.

Growth throughout the district has accelerated since 1976 and has exceeded the Statistics New Zealand projections. While population growth nationally has largely resulted from international migration, in the Thames-Coromandel district it has been driven by migration from other areas in New Zealand - particularly, those in retirement.

The people of the Thames-Coromandel district have adapted positively to social and economic structure changes over recent years, particularly with the growth of tourism and its impacts on the area. With further, large growth expected across the district, Council must ensure its strategic direction is well positioned to meet these challenges.
