Southland is located at the Southern end of the South Island of New Zealand. It is administered by three territorial local authorities - the Southland District Council, the Gore District Council and the Invercargill City Council.
The District is an area of contrast - from the rugged coastline and mountain chains of Fiordland, to the plains of Southland.
With this complex topography, the District possesses a variety of climatic conditions varying from the high rainfall in Fiordland, to the drier climate of Northern Southland.
The majority of the District's wealth comes from the land with wool, prime lamb, dairying and beef production being the traditional types of farming. The other main industries are tourism, forestry and fishing.
The Southland District is an area of unlimited possibilities for development, with a temperate climate, natural beauty and friendly people, where the pace of life is slower and may be enjoyed to the fullest.
