The Rangitikei District is located in the central North Island and covers a geographic area of 4,538 square kilometres. The District is bounded by the Kaimanawa Mountains in the North, Ruahine Ranges and Rangitikei River in the East, Tasman Sea in the South and Whangaehu River in the West.
The Rangitikei River has become a key focal point within the central North Island for adventure tourism and recreation. The District is renowned for its historic homes and beautiful gardens. It has one of the larget clusters of heritage homes in New Zealand.
The provisional 2006 Census Night Population was 14,800.
