Since 2002, annual population growth has ranged between on and two percent. The city's population is projected to reach 416,725 by 2026.

Prior to the 2006 amalgamation with the former Banks Peninsula District Council, the land area of Christchuch City was 44,140 hectres. Christchurch city now has a land area of 149,350 hectres, of which 13 per cent is zoned as urban (for use such as residential, commercial or industrial), and the remainder is zone as non-urban (for uses such as rural, open space and conservation). An additional 11,640 hectres are classified as coastal marine areas.

The strength of the Christchurch City’s economy is built on its association with the large rural economy of Canterbury. Manufacturing continues to employ the most people, while tourism and information technologies are significant contributor to the local economy.
