Ashburton District is bounded in the east by the Pacific Ocean, the west by the Southern Alps and has as its northern and southern boundaries, the Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers respectively. Agriculture underpins the District's economy with 37% of our GDP coming from the agriculture, meat & vegetable processing industries in 2007. Traditionally a sheep & grain-growing district, an increase in irrigation in recent years has lead to land-use change, particularly to dairy.
