Staying Updated & Connecting with Others

LGOL offers a number of facilities to promote discussions, both within and across local government organisations and with the public and community groups.  The two most popular forms of communication are our online groups and discussion list facilities.

How do the Lists and Groups Work?

There are over 200,000 people subscribed to the lists who collectively send and receive almost 500,000 communications each month!  The lists operate as a virtual team or community of your peers where you can pose a question regarding a problem issue or idea that you have come across in your day to day work or on a special project and every other person that works in local government in the same role as you will be able to share their thoughts, ideas and potential solutions.  It helps you keep up-to-date with current issues and provides the ability to utilise the experience of others in the same situation.  They even have a cool archive facility where you can look up the answers to a question someone asked last week, last month or even last year!

The online groups function in a similar way to the list except the primary interface is via a web portal, as opposed to email used for the lists.

LGOL also provides a similar service to councils and councillors as a method of being able to easily keep in touch with their communities.

Who can join?

The lists are generally restricted to New Zealand local government employees or those carrying out work in the sector.  There are some exceptions to this, the most prominent being the WHATSNEW list.   LGOL What's New is a bi-weekly news round up of what is happening in the sector sent each Monday and Thursday.  This mailing list is open to anyone that wishes to receive the What's New updates

How do I join?

Subscribe to a list by emailing listserv@listserv.localgovt.co.nz with subscribe and the group name in the body of the email e.g.subscribe INFOMGRS.

To subscribe to one of the Online Groups email techdirector@localgovt.co.nz  with details of the groups that you would like to join and your job title, council and other contact details.

The terms and conditions of using the lists and online groups can be found here.

The group I want isn't on the list!

LGOL is always happy to add lists to extend the availability of the facility to elected members and other government agencies with a need to communicate regularly with interest groups. Email LGOL's Technical Director, Bob Vine, at techdirector@localgovt.co.nz to discuss the creation of a List to meet your needs.
